The windows in our apartment face the industrial section of the riverside. As a result, the exterior glass is really, really dirty. I've tried Windex over and over, but the glass just looks smeared though slightly cleaner.
Any advice on how to conquer hard-to-clean windows?

Use a degreaser - in a bucket of warm water with a rag. After the window is clean you wipe with a papertowel and windex.

I like mom's idea. dirty windows are a serious pet-peeve of mine. of course kids are a means of grace in helping me to get over that area of obsessiveness...
In a grocery store it is 409 or Fantastic. For the real stuff go to hardware store & ask them where to find degreaser -- we use the real stuff for lots of things even cleaning car tires.

Vinegar in water is my favorite window cleaning compound. Mix it in a bucket or bowl and use a non abrasive nylon cloth on it. Use just a few tablespoons of vinegar in a bowl, more if the surface is really dirty. Wipe dry with a lint free towel. This environmentally friendly, people-safe solution works great on ceramic tile and any glass surface and it isn't abrasive. If the spots are from hard water film, use a lime remover, like lime-away but dilute it in water and rinse off fairly quickly. Again, a non abrasive nylon cleaning cloth helps remove the build up.
Heather made me remember and laugh. When she was a toddler, she liked to lick the windows. And she taught both Bethany & Evie how to do it. Eww gross! I kept the windows clean, and,yes, I used vineagar in water at that time! But for real greasy dirt (ie, city dirt) you are going to have to use a strong cleaner or a lot of elbow grease!
i just saw someone post about using vodka to clean lenses. maybe for super-dirty windows, too?
